Success Stories from the Field: 2011


Solutions in Action are examples of the ways UF/IFAS Extension touches the lives of Floridians. All over the peninsula, we reach people just like you. Find out how we provide solutions every day.

UF/IFAS Extension has a local office in every county in the state. Offices and counties are grouped regionally into five districts, and county faculty within these districts work together to meet the needs of their local communities through educational programs, field day demonstrations, and one-on-one interaction with local residents.

TractorNorthwest District

The Northwest District consists of the following counties: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the annual Farm Tour in Santa Rosa County, the state's largest green roof in Escambia County, the new Leon County Extension office featuring sustainable design, and the 4-H Ag Adventure program.

Fall festivalNortheast District

The Northeast District consists of the following counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, Suwannee, Taylor, and Union.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Harvest Festival in Suwannee County, the Urban Tree Care program in Duval County, the Medicare Education program in Nassau County, and the Pastured Poultry program in Suwannee and Duval counties.

Spring festival signCentral District

The Central District consists of the following counties: Brevard, Citrus, Flagler, Hernando, Lake, Marion, Osceola, Orange, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns, Sumter, and Volusia.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Master Gardener Spring Festival in Marion County, the 4-H nutrition curriculum in Lake County, the Economic Living Expo in Orange County, and the Alternative Agriculture program in St. Johns County.

Scuba diversSouth Central District

The South Central District consists of the following counties: Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, and Sarasota.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Goliath Grouper Count, the Phillippi Farmers Market in Sarasota County, the Pinellas Energy Efficiency Project, and the No Mow By-Way program in Pasco County.

Horse and riderSouth District

The South District consists of the following counties: Broward, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Area-F 4-H horse show, the Seafood Safety program in Miami-Dade County, biomass for bio-energy as a citrus alternative for growers, and Spanish-language farm safety education

Statewide programsStatewide Programs

Success Stories for statewide programs this year include the Weed Control eradication program, Youth Understanding MyPyramid or YUM program, the Health Rocks program, and the 4-H marine ecology event.
