Nutrition Programs for Families
Video Transcript
Audrey Norman, Palm Beach County Extension Director: "We have two programs that serve similar audiences. One is the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, which is almost forty years old and has been in this county for at least half that number of years."
"The second program is the Family Nutrition Program, or FNP, and that is a relatively new program that has been around ten to twelve years. And it serves anyone eligible for food stamps and anyone already receiving food stamp benefits. And so that--in this county--includes more children than adults. But again the focus is on wise nutrition practices, food management, and then food safety."
"It’s in-depth. We do at least six sessions with each group whether it’s a group of children or a group of adults. Each lesson does include some experiential learning, whether it be preparing a healthy snack or a healthy meal. That allows participants to really go home and following that lesson be able to practice it one or more times prior to coming to the next session."
"This has been a very positive solution for people's lives in our community. We have seen families that have not only saved dollars, but certainly have embraced good food safety habits. They tell us that they are using less fat, or the right kinds of fat, or they're reducing their sodium. Children are telling us they're making choices such as milk or juice or water over all the sodas."
"It’s very important for young children to be aware of healthy habits because we know that many food habits are established before a child is six years old, and those habits are lifelong. So the earlier we can influence positive food habits, the better off those individuals are."
Chris Kilbride, Martin County Extension Agent: "Think Nutrition During the Hurricane has been designed by South Florida agents, and we've taught over a thousand people. And we're trying to teach them nutritious ways to get supplies and nutritious meals needing little preparation."
Kim Gable, Monroe County Extension Agent: "The Florida Keys Green Living and Energy Expo is a success because it's been able to draw four thousand people--homeowners, businesses, and government officials--on ways to do energy conservation in the home, landscape, and for ordinance change."
Ed Skvarch, St. Lucie County Extension Agent: "I think the success of the Africanized Honey Bee Program is that we were able to train over two hundred first responders to an Africanized Honey Bee incident. It is a proactive approach to protecting the citizens of St. Lucie County."
