Sea Animal Veterinarians
Video Transcript
Janine Cianciolo, veterinarian and SEAVET teacher: "Historically it seems that aquatic animals--fish, turtles, even marine mammals--have been a little bit neglected, and we're just starting to catch up with that kind of medicine.
"Up until recently, fish were just considered disposable pets. You know--your goldfish dies, you buy another one. No one ever considered bringing them to a vet, that they were important animals too. That we could save and do work with them.
"We have students from all over the world that will come through the SEAVET program and get information from some of the leading areas in the areas in Florida that are working with this.
"That's what's so special about this program. As they visit the different institutions not only do they just have the lectures, but they get the hands-on [experience]. They're in the water here catching the turtles, learning how to draw blood. It's really important information they may never get again unless they actually go into this field.
"Veterinary medicine is no longer limited to just inside a zoo or inside someone's house. The field of conservation veterinary medicine and wildlife veterinary medicine ... working hand in hand to make environmental decisions is just expanding. And that's just one of the things we're trying to impress upon the students."
