Sea Animal Doctors
The SEAVET program is a two-part, two-week summer program for University of Florida veterinary students. It provides a unique opportunity for these animal doctors-in-training to learn about and work with a variety of sea animals that their regular classes don't cover, like manatees and dolphins.
Morning lectures teach the biological history of the animals and their importance to Florida ecosystems, and afternoon hands-on labs let the students get some experience working with these animals.
Experts and vets at zoos and other animal-centered entertainment facilities across the state host the lectures and labs. Hosts have included Walt Disney World, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, St. Augustine Alligator Farm, Lowery Park Zoo, and MarineLab.
Janine Cianciolo, featured in our video, is the senior veterinarian for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and a teacher/presenter for the SEAVET program. The aquarium is a rehabilitation and treatment facility for stranded or injured sea animals. It specializes in treating sea turtles, with the goal of returning them to the wild as quickly as possible.
