Buzz Busters Program
Video Transcript
James DeValerio, Bradford County Horticultural Extension Agent: "The Buzz Busters program is a program which uses integrated pest management practices on mosquito control, working with the public, training them on how to use integrated pest management practices and applying them to mosquito control."
"The volunteers sample adult and larval populations at up to sixteen zones in the county on a weekly basis. And the larva and adult bodies are collected, counted, and mailed to the entomological lab to be part of the statewide mosquito population database. So their efforts contribute to local mosquito control, and also they fit into the state and regional picture as well."
"The county is very thankful. All the county commissioners and manager--they’re all really thankful for our efforts because Bradford County has a limited budget. They don’t have money for integrated pest management, and they need help with training, for bringing in some of these new technologies, and frankly they depend on us to help them have a more efficient, eco-friendly mosquito-control program."
"It is a solution for the lives of people in the county by reducing the risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission. Anything we can do to help reduce the threat of them is a help."
Narrator: "The Buzz Buster program is just one of many developed by the 'Green Team'. This group of Northeast Extension agents comes together to design educational programs for the district. Green Team collaborations include the Junior Master Gardener Program in Duval County, where Terry Devalle brings Master Gardener volunteers into schools to teach children about the relationship between insects and plants. In Clay County, residents are buzzing about Ray Zerba’s honey-beekeeping program that teaches residents how gentle managed bees can be. And Rebecca Jordi is sharing best management practices for landscape maintenance with homeowners in Nassau County, one neighborhood at a time."
