IFAS Extension: Agriculture & More!

Video Transcript

Bobby Beagles: Orange County cattle ranch owner "IFAS has helped with the calf/calf operations and they’ve helped us with the type of grass we use on the ranch. They’re great for information on herbicides and the latest information you can get on worm medicines and the different types of things we can use on our cattle to keep them producing and to keep us making money and staying in operation."

"Let me say, I will go back to when Florida first started getting integrated with Tropical Soda Apple [TSA]. I went to my friend who was speaker of the house in Tallahassee at the time, Tom Finney, and got the research money appropriated to try to do a study to try to come up with a product to get rid of TSA because TSA to cattle ranchers is a nightmare, and if it ever gets into row crops or along our highways, it would be a disaster. And Dow Chemicals--with the help of University of Florida and DOA, Department of Agriculture--has come up with a chemical that is almost 80-percent proof it will kill TSA."

"When we started out years and years ago, the research that IFAS did kept us in the business. Today as agriculture goes down, IFAS needs to spend more money on education and TV time, explaining to homeowners and to the homeowners associations and ‘mom and pop’ operations what Extension offers."

"The most important thing for IFAS to do is build up their water program--how to save water, how to take care of your lawns and what you should do to have green grass. Because that’s something everybody wants in their front yards. With those programs, along with the agriculture programs, IFAS could be number one like they should be in the state of Florida."
