4-H Nutrition Programs

Video Transcript

Beth Tobias, Pinellas County 4-H Agent: "Within the 4-H Healthy Cooking Program, the goal is really for our young people in 4-H to have the opportunity to share a cooking experience with other teens in the community to promote that eating healthy can be fun and exciting and also teach them how to cook and prepare different food items."

"We’ve been actually running the Nutrition Program with the Healthy Lifestyles for about four years through the STEPS grant, and this year we’ve added the cooking experience, and it has been really well received, and the teens have really been highly motivated and excited each week when we come and are just really feeling confident because they're building all these skills."

"There’s a total of about 260-plus teens from all over the St. Pete area from about nine different REC centers, and it’s really been successful because when we come out each week the teens are really excited about these cooking experiences, and they’re really have built their confidence about their ability to prepare these dishes."

"The issue of child obesity is an issue here both locally in Pinellas, but as well as statewide and nationally. But I think 4-H is able to do its part in finding a solution by interacting and bringing a hands-on cooking experience to teens in the community to help them learn a skill that’s going to last, and be able to share with their families about how to cook in a healthier way."

Narrator: "Extension agents in the South Central District focus on improving their communities for the future. Nicole Walker is improving Polk County with an after-school program that teaches elementary school children life skills. Roy Beckford’s bio-diesel program offers an agricultural alternative to citrus farmers in Lee County and could soon offer consumers a new form of fuel. Betty Staugler is making waterways in Charlotte County safer for boaters by training volunteers to identify derelict crab traps and coordinating cleanup events in the Peace River. And in Pinellas County, Devesh Nirmul is teaching residents how they can preserve their natural areas for future generations with simple, sustainable steps."
